Birding with Mormor (photos provided by the internet)

The bird we did not see at the Springfield Mall:

A snowy owl visiting Virginia from the northern tundras.

But some of the birds we saw today at the Occoquan Bay  National Wildlife Refuge:

Several yellow shafted flickers in all their glory!

The bluest of darling blue birds

Four large immature eagles hanging out on the ice in the middle of Occoquan Bay.

(only immature eagles would be goofing off on the ice)

And Betty was pretty sure she spotted some red headed ducks.

After a picking up lunch at Chick fila we went to the Yorkshire/Manassas Park water treatment center
at which were spotted...

common merganser

(what could be at all common about that brilliant green head and bright red beak?)

great blue heron

('great' indeed when seen through binoculars)

What a lovely sister date today!  Thanks be to God!
